Peplum, or more specifically “a flared ruffle attached to the waist of a jacket, dress, or blouse,” has become quite the popular trend. It’s actually a recycled one, having been big in the 40’s and again in the late 1980’s to the tone of shoulder pads and glitter. A statement piece in itself, peplum can often be tricky to pull off. When worn incorrectly, it can make your hips look big, and critics have claimed it’s too fussy and costume-inspired. On the brighter side, however, peplum holds the power to accentuate your figure. And that’s more of what we’re all looking for, right?
Vera Wang, who incorporated this look into her spring 2012 runway show, is a designer who still backs this updated trend. She recently stated, “A peplum is a play on proportion to make the waist look smaller.”
So whether you want to look royal like Kate or as effortlessly chic as Blake, hop on the peplum bandwagon ASAP. This style can work for both casual and formal occasions, as proved by Michelle Williams at this year’s Oscars ceremony. I purchased this Alice+Olivia tee last year and frequently paired it with red jeans or a black pencil skirt. It’s proved to a versatile and classic asset to my closet.
