I jumped on the opportunity
and then on a train to join the Aveda team backstage before Saturday’s premiere of Christian Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection.
Intricate milkmaid styles with center parts took the forefront, and I fell in love with braids all over again. To watch professionals work on all types of hair and create a gorgeous product every single time really speaks to the true talents of trained Aveda stylists.
It was especially a pleasure to observe Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders as she worked her mane magic. She explained the inspiration behind the braids saying, “This collection is inspired by the golden age of Russian Opera and Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre. The clothing is rich and opulent, so we designed a sophisticated, feminine look to properly complement it. From the front, the look has a lovely roundness. The braids at the back evoke refinement and glamour, reminiscent of a Russian girl dressed for an evening at the opera.”
To recreate the look, Aveda recommends first prepping hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep, and then blowdrying hair straight. Next, create a clean center part from forehead to nape, then make an inverted fishtail braid on each side of the head. You should begin at the crown and work to the back of the ear, securing the end of each braid with an elastic band.
Add body and fullness by gently massaging the braids, then fold them over one another across the back of the head in a crisscross fashion. Tuck ends under and secure with
lots of bobby pins. The final product is romantic, classic, and beautiful.
To add to the beauty chaos, backstage was also designated for makeup prep.
MAC Cosmetics Lead Artist Polly Osmond also collaborated with Siriano to create a fresh faced yet unique look for his models. I was fascinated not only watching her, but also the rest of her team. To think about applying eyeliner to anyone other than myself is stressful, let alone to 10+ models.
In the two hours that I explored backstage, it’s kind of amazing what was learned. I love Aveda’s products even more than before, and their staff was incredibly accommodating to everyone. Secondly, I’m just as obsessed with Christian Siriano as the very first time I saw him on Project Runway. He was present in all aspects of his NYFW presentation, which includes that whole hair and makeup thing. Lastly, it takes a hell of a lot of people to produce something so fierce and fabulous. And for the record, it definitely worked out in Siriano’s favor.
